It was a buzzer beater, but the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons make a NBA trade deadline deal that reunites a former player back with the Pistons, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.
The Celtics will send Tayshaun Prince to the Pistons in exchange for Luigi Datome and Jonas Jerebko, according to Vincent Ellis of the Detroit Free Press. Prince will now rejoin the team he broke into the NBA with back in 2002.
During his time with the Pistons from 2002-2013 (11 seasons), Prince averaged 12.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 0.6 blocks over 769 games. The Compton, California native won the 2004 NBA Championship with the Pistons and a four-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team member.
Following his time in Detroit, Prince was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies along with Austin Daye in a three-team trade. He played 139 games over three seasons with Memphis, averaging 7.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
This is the 34-year-old’s second trade this season. Prince was dealt to the Celtics by the Grizzlies in a three-team deal on January 12, 2015. While in Boston, the forward averaged 8.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in nine games.
It was expected that if the Celtics were unable to move Prince at the deadline he would be bought out so he could find a team to sign with that would give him a shot at an NBA title. This deal was the better option for Boston.
Tayhshaun Prince now joins a 22-33 Pistons team, the team he started his career with.
Also returning to his home is Kevin Garnett. According to his agent, Garnett agreed to drop his no-trade clause and accept a trade from the Brooklyn Nets to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Thaddeus Young.
